Three Non-surgical Ways to Rejuvenate Your Face this Summer

May 18, 2014 BY BELLADERM MEDSPA

You may have heard it before, 40 is the new 30 and 50 is the new 40. This is much more that a new frame of mind, its about your visual age verses your chronological age. You do not have to look your age anymore – with safe and effective nonsurgical cosmetic procedures you can look years younger. And you can do it with little to no down with these three non-surgical ways to rejuvenate your face this summer.

  1. BOTOX® / Dysport®

BOTOX® is one of the most recent and most exciting advances for treatment of wrinkles, lines, and the aging face. BOTOX® is a highly purified, naturally occurring protein which has the ability to very precisely relax the muscles to which it is applied. This relaxation lasts for a number of months, and then the treated muscles gradually return to their original condition. BOTOX® does not affect the nerves responsible for sensation, so there is no numbness in the treated areas. This is done in a way that will not alter your natural expression and features. It takes just a few minutes and normally lasts about 3-4 months.
Visit the BOTOX® website to try the Treatment Visualizer.

  2. Dermal Fillers and Injectables

Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvéderm® and Radiesse® are being used more and more to help reverse the changes associated with aging. As you age, sun damage and other factors can reduce the amount of HA (hyaluronic acid) in your skin. The lack of HA causes your skin to lose structure and volume — creating unwanted facial wrinkles and folds, like those parentheses lines around your nose and mouth. The goal is to return the dermis to its original youthful state. Dermal fillers can give a more natural appearance than surgical face lifts and are being used to reduce or eliminate wrinkles, raise scar depressions, enhance lips, and replace soft-tissue volume loss. When scheduling your appointment make sure your calendar allows for the possibility of swelling for 3-5 days (especially the first treatment). Visit the Juvéderm® site to view before and after images.

  3. HydraFacial™

Detoxify, Rejuvenate, Protect

HydraFacial offers a variety of serums to specifically target your skin issues, including:

  • Sun damaged skin
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne
  • Brown spots
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Early aging fine lines and wrinkles.

This is a revolutionary skin treatment that gently clears away imperfections and improves the look and feel of your skin. HydraFacial is an advanced non-invasive, non-surgical procedure that quickly and easily delivers results without the use of lasers or harsh chemicals. It combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously, resulting in clearer, more beautiful skin with no discomfort or downtime. HydraFacial targets fine lines and wrinkles, congested and enlarged pores, oily or acne-prone skin, hyper pigmentation and brown spots.

People are taking better care of themselves and they are living much longer than they did decades ago.  During the twentieth century, life expectancy rose dramatically amongst the world’s wealthiest populations from around 50 to over 75 years. Since people are living much longer nowadays they deserve to look as good as they feel.

10 Best Ways to Protect Your Skin From the Sultry Summer Sun

May 10, 2014 BY BELLADERM MEDSPA

Though it might not feel like it, summer IS coming sooner than we think and you’ll be prepared for it when you know a variety of ways to protect your skin from the hot summer sun. We just spent some time focusing on skin cancer prevention and this blog goes hand in hand with that topic. We’re going to look at ways you can protect yourself and your family since most skin cancer is caused by excessive and unprotected exposure to UV radiation.

  1. Sun protection isn’t just for your skin. Don’t forget your lips! Use a lip balm with a sunscreen of at least SPF15. Pick up your complimentary lip balm at Belladerm when you stop in to see us.
  2. Watch the clock. Sun exposure is most damaging between 10:00 AM-2:00 PM so do your best to limit sun exposure between those hours.  Use the shadow rule: if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest, and you should find some shade if you want to be outdoors. Check the forecast so you can quickly learn what the UV index is and stay informed about how harsh the rays will be on any given day. If it creeps up towards 10, use extra caution or stay indoors.
  3. When you can, protect your skin with a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and a hat. Keep in mind that dark clothing with tightly woven fabric blocks more sun than white or loosely woven fabrics. You can also find clothing made with special sun-protective materials.
  4. The delicate skin around your eyes is easily affected by the sun’s powerful rays. Always wear sunglasses with 99% to 100% UV absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin.
  5. Be aware of how medications affect your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Examples of some that make you more sensitive: specific types of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, antifungals, blood pressure medications, and chemotherapies.
  6. Be beach smart. Water and sand will all intensify the rays hitting your skin and water will wash away your protection. Reapply your sunscreen regularly but even more so when you’re enjoying a beach day!
  7. Cloudy days are ALSO sunscreen days. You just won’t feel the heat of the sun as much on those days but please don’t skip your sunscreen. You should choose a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.
  8. Those of you with little ones will also need to know the importance of protection from early on.  Getting a bad sunburn in childhood increases a person’s risk of developing skin cancer as an adult.
  9. Choose wisely. Sunscreen creams are better for dry skin, and gels are better for the scalp or hairy areas. Sunscreen sprays are found everywhere are make application fast and easy, but when possible, avoid using them.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not sure that enough sunscreen makes it onto the skin and is concerned that the spray may be inhaled into the lungs.
  10. We are passionate about protecting your skin. Stop in for our current sunscreen special. 10% off all sunscreen products through the end of May including Obaji Sunshield SPF50, Revision Intellishade SPF45, SkinMedica Daily Physical Defense SPF30 and Environmental Defense SPF50.

You may already have heard many of these before but it never hurts to get a refresher before the hot weather arrives. Never underestimate the importance of the protecting your skin from the sultry summer sun!

What every Minnesotan needs to know about skin cancer and the damaging effects of the sun

April 27, 2014 BY BELLADERM MEDSPA
We mentioned in our April Newsletter that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. While we have many products and services that treat skin that has already seen sun damage, we are also passionate about educating you about skin cancer prevention and ways to protect your skin before the damage occurs. The sun can give your skin a warm glow, but the new color you see IS a sign of skin damage. Trust us, we see the not-so-pretty effects of sun exposure every day! That’s why this blog is dedicated to what every Minnesotan needs to know about skin cancer and the damaging effects of the sun.
EVEN HERE WITH OUR NEVERENDING WINTERS?
With spring weather finally arriving, everyone is anxious to get outdoors to exercise, do yard work or play with the kids.  Since we live in a colder climate, many Minnesotans don’t  worry quite as much about sun protection. After all, they are cooped up inside and out of the rays of the sun for so many winter months and they need more vitamin D. While the sun is a great source of vitamin D, a recent study showed that people who use sunscreen still experience a spike in vitamin D levels after sitting in the sun so keep that in mind! Boost your levels with D-filled foods such as salmon, egg yolks, and mushrooms, too.
NO MORE EXCUSES! GET THAT ANNUAL SKIN CHECK DONE!
Melanoma Monday is May 5th
We know, life gets busy and there isn’t anything on your skin that is particularly concerning at the moment, so that dermatologist appointment can wait, right? Wrong. This really IS something you need to do. Tell your friends and family, too. Visit this page to find a clinic near you to visit. You’ll also find helpful tools and resources there. Skin checks are quick and easy and you’ll feel better knowing someone is keeping an eye on possible skin changes. You’ve heard it before – early detection is key! Below is an example of what a changing mole might look like. Suspicious moles are often ones that are not even in color. Other reasons to be suspicious are: asymmetry, uneven borders, changes like growth in size of mole or itchy/bleeding moles or a mole that just looks different than the rest of your moles.
SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT MELANOMA
    • On average, one American dies from melanoma every hour. In 2014, it is estimated that 9,710 deaths will be attributed to melanoma.
    • Melanoma is the most common cancer for young adults 25 to 29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old.
    • When caught early, skin cancer – including melanoma – is highly treatable. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent.
    • Just shy of 77,000 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed last year across the nation.
  • More men than women were diagnosed with skin cancer and more men died from skin cancer last year.
