Spider Vein Therapy–‐Best way to remove unsightly veins!

Tuesday, May 27th, 2014

The arrival of summer weather can bring mixed emotions for many people. Coupled with the excitement of getting outside and enjoying the beautiful summer days is the dread of wearing shorts and knowing that everyone will see their purplish, branching spider veins. Around half of the population deals with spider veins and faces this problem every summer.  What can you do about it if you suffer from them? Belladerm offers excellent options to remove the unsightly veins.

1. Sclerotherapy is still considered the treatment of choice for the removal of superficial leg veins, many vessels may be too small to inject or patients may have an aversion to this invasive procedure. So what is it, anyway? Large areas of veins can be treated with hair-thin needles that inject a solution which irritates the lining of the vessel.  The irritation causes the vessel to swell and stick together, as well as making the blood clot.  In a matter of weeks, the vessel turns into scar tissue that eventually fades and becomes barely noticeable. Following the procedure, you will need to wear compression stockings for a short period of time but it will be well worth it.

2. IPL treatments are another option for these pesky veins. Intense Pulsed Light treatments use heat energy to selectively damage or destroy abnormal veins. As a result, the veins shrink and disappear. An advantage of these treatments is that no needles or sclerosing solutions are required.

You may have heard some myths about spider veins in general. Let’s clear up some of the facts here.

  •  Tanning does not hide the appearance of spider veins. In fact, excessive sun exposure can cause spider veins since harmful ultraviolet light breaks down collagen, which composes the walls of spider veins, and can cause thinning and spreading of the veins.
  • Vitamin supplements won’t prevent spider veins.
  • Spider veins aren’t caused by crossing your legs.
  • Gaining a lot of weight does not make you more susceptible to spider veins.
  • Heredity accounts for 80% of people who get spider veins.
  • Women are more prone to developing them. Especially those who stand regularly for their jobs and who have a blood relative with spider veins.

Don’t hide your legs this summer and suffer wearing long pants in the heat. You really can feel good about your legs again! Spider vein therapy is available at Belladerm with the best ways to remove the unsightly branching leg veins.

Three Non-surgical Ways to Rejuvenate Your Face this Summer

Sunday, May 18th, 2014

You may have heard it before, 40 is the new 30 and 50 is the new 40. This is much more that a new frame of mind, its about your visual age verses your chronological age. You do not have to look your age anymore – with safe and effective nonsurgical cosmetic procedures you can look years younger. And you can do it with little to no down with these three non-surgical ways to rejuvenate your face this summer.

  1. BOTOX® / Dysport®

BOTOX® is one of the most recent and most exciting advances for treatment of wrinkles, lines, and the aging face. BOTOX® is a highly purified, naturally occurring protein which has the ability to very precisely relax the muscles to which it is applied. This relaxation lasts for a number of months, and then the treated muscles gradually return to their original condition. BOTOX® does not affect the nerves responsible for sensation, so there is no numbness in the treated areas. This is done in a way that will not alter your natural expression and features. It takes just a few minutes and normally lasts about 3-4 months.

Visit the BOTOX® website to try the Treatment Visualizer.

  2. Dermal Fillers and Injectables

Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvéderm® and Radiesse® are being used more and more to help reverse the changes associated with aging. As you age, sun damage and other factors can reduce the amount of HA (hyaluronic acid) in your skin. The lack of HA causes your skin to lose structure and volume — creating unwanted facial wrinkles and folds, like those parentheses lines around your nose and mouth. The goal is to return the dermis to its original youthful state. Dermal fillers can give a more natural appearance than surgical face lifts and are being used to reduce or eliminate wrinkles, raise scar depressions, enhance lips, and replace soft-tissue volume loss. When scheduling your appointment make sure your calendar allows for the possibility of swelling for 3-5 days (especially the first treatment). Visit the Juvéderm® site to view before and after images.

  3. HydraFacial™

Detoxify, Rejuvenate, Protect

HydraFacial offers a variety of serums to specifically target your skin issues, including:

  • Sun damaged skin
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne
  • Brown spots
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Early aging fine lines and wrinkles.

This is a revolutionary skin treatment that gently clears away imperfections and improves the look and feel of your skin. HydraFacial is an advanced non-invasive, non-surgical procedure that quickly and easily delivers results without the use of lasers or harsh chemicals. It combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously, resulting in clearer, more beautiful skin with no discomfort or downtime. HydraFacial targets fine lines and wrinkles, congested and enlarged pores, oily or acne-prone skin, hyper pigmentation and brown spots.

People are taking better care of themselves and they are living much longer than they did decades ago.  During the twentieth century, life expectancy rose dramatically amongst the world’s wealthiest populations from around 50 to over 75 years. 10 Best Ways to Protect Your Skin From the Sultry Summer Sun

Saturday, May 10th, 2014

Young beautiful sexy blond tanned smiling woman with sun-protect

Though it might not feel like it, summer IS coming sooner than we think and you’ll be prepared for it when you know a variety of ways to protect your skin from the hot summer sun. We just spent some time focusing on skin cancer prevention and this blog goes hand in hand with that topic. We’re going to look at ways you can protect yourself and your family since most skin cancer is caused by excessive and unprotected exposure to UV radiation.

  1. Sun protection isn’t just for your skin. Don’t forget your lips! Use a lip balm with a sunscreen of at least SPF15. Pick up your complimentary lip balm at Belladerm when you stop in to see us.
  2. Watch the clock. Sun exposure is most damaging between 10:00 AM-2:00 PM so do your best to limit sun exposure between those hours.  Use the shadow rule: if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest, and you should find some shade if you want to be outdoors. Check the forecast so you can quickly learn what the UV index is and stay informed about how harsh the rays will be on any given day. If it creeps up towards 10, use extra caution or stay indoors.
  3. When you can, protect your skin with a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and a hat. Keep in mind that dark clothing with tightly woven fabric blocks more sun than white or loosely woven fabrics. You can also find clothing made with special sun-protective materials.
  4. The delicate skin around your eyes is easily affected by the sun’s powerful rays. Always wear sunglasses with 99% to 100% UV absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin.
  5. Be aware of how medications affect your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Examples of some that make you more sensitive: specific types of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, antifungals, blood pressure medications, and chemotherapies.
  6. Be beach smart. Water and sand will all intensify the rays hitting your skin and water will wash away your protection. Reapply your sunscreen regularly but even more so when you’re enjoying a beach day!
  7. Cloudy days are ALSO sunscreen days. You just won’t feel the heat of the sun as much on those days but please don’t skip your sunscreen. You should choose a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.
  8. Those of you with little ones will also need to know the importance of protection from early on.  Getting a bad sunburn in childhood increases a person’s risk of developing skin cancer as an adult.
  9. Choose wisely. Sunscreen creams are better for dry skin, and gels are better for the scalp or hairy areas. Sunscreen sprays are found everywhere are make application fast and easy, but when possible, avoid using them.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not sure that enough sunscreen makes it onto the skin and is concerned that the spray may be inhaled into the lungs.
  10. We are passionate about protecting your skin. Stop in for our current sunscreen special. 10% off all sunscreen products through the end of May including Obaji Sunshield SPF50, Revision Intellishade SPF45, SkinMedica Daily Physical Defense SPF30 and Environmental Defense SPF50.

You may already have heard many of these before but it never hurts to get a refresher before the hot weather arrives. Never underestimate the importance of the protecting your skin from the sultry summer sun!

Robin’s Pick: Best Five Weight Loss Tips

Thursday, May 1st, 2014

We all know that dieting is not a lot of fun, but looking good in your summer clothes is! When it comes to losing a few pounds, what key things will help you succeed?

Here are some of my best five weight loss tips:

Get in the right frame of mind.

1. Determine your main objective. To lose weight successfully, you first need to have a real desire and a main objective. With both of these, you will be more focused and determined to achieve your goal, keeping you from getting off track.  Therefore, it is important for you to determine your objective first. Maybe it’s an upcoming event or simply the thought of slipping into last years summer clothes, or better yet, buying some new ones.

2. Visualization- When temptation occurs take a deep breath and visualize a thinner happier you! Let’s face it, we are happier when we look our best. If you can visualize yourself feeling and looking good, the chances of your succeeding will be far greater.

Get into a daily diet routine

3. Drink lots and lots of water.  This seems like a no brainer but in reality it is one dieting rule that is often overlooked and can make the difference in terms of flushing out toxins and feeling full. Plus, that extra water will give your complexion a youthful glow.

4. Eat five cups of veggies every day. Vegetables are high in nutrients, low calorie and they fill you up. You can always divvy these [five cups] up during the day. I like to have two cups with lunch, two cups with dinner and one cup as a morning or afternoon snack. Don’t worry too much about eating the “right” ones.  Choose the ones you enjoy eating the most.

5. Have three protein rich meals. Protein kick starts your metabolism and suppresses the appetite.  Another protein benefit is it keeps you feeling full, so stock up on chicken, turkey, fresh fish and cottage cheese.

Here’s a link to help you  get creative with your meal planning and enjoy delicious low-fat high protein meals: High Protein Low Fat Meals

Most importantly, remember to stay positive, visualize the new and improved you and give yourself a nice reward when you’ve reached your goal!
