How to Cope with Holiday Stress and Embrace the Season

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

Young woman wearing Santa's hat is screaming.

Crunch time is here! With December 25th quickly approaching, the final countdown is on and tensions are rising. Yes, some of you are sitting there smugly thinking about how you’re almost completely done with all of your Christmas shopping, wrapping, decorating, baking, etc. BUT for most of us, we are juggling a list in our heads and are scrambling to figure out what in the world to get the kids’ teacher this year and wondering how we will possibly have enough time to get it all done. Breathe. Step back and look at the big picture. This is all supposed to be fun. A season of celebration and joy. We get so caught up in the prep that we miss it sometimes. We rounded up some great tips on managing the holiday stress so you can really embrace the awesome season we’re in and your loved ones, too.

Make a budget and stick to it. Money is one of the major stressors during the holidays. Don’t dig yourself into a hole by overspending. A thoughtful gift doesn’t have to be expensive. If money is tight, suggest a family gift exchange with a spending limit.

Create new traditions. Stressed out by the usual festivities? Try something different. Instead of cooking a huge meal on your own, make it a potluck. Ask adults to bring gag gifts or have a “white elephant” or used book gift exchange. Attend a local holiday concert, walk the neighborhood to look at holiday lights, or go sledding.

Beware of unhealthy stress relievers. Holiday stress causes some people to fall into bad habits such as smoking, drinking, or eating too much. Think about any unhealthy habits you’re prone to and better ways to handle stress.

Make time for your health. In the holiday rush, don’t let your well-being fall by the wayside. Try to stay on your normal sleep schedule and get regular exercise. If you can’t find a 30-minute chunk of time for exercise, break it up into three 10-minute sessions spread through the day.

Accept reality. Don’t expect perfect decorations, a perfect meal, or perfect people. Try to go with the flow and enjoy what you have. Pinterest can make us all feel less-than-good-enough but don’t let it!

Spread love & joy. Focus on what the season is all about, like doing good deeds for others. Be careful to not overload your schedule so that you are spread too thin to do some of these. Brainstorm about how you can brighten someone’s day and it will make you feel good in the process!

Happy Holidays from all of us here at Belladerm Medspa! We look forward to seeing you soon!

What every Minnesotan needs to know about skin cancer and the damaging effects of the sun

Sunday, April 27th, 2014
We mentioned in our April Newsletter that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. While we have many products and services that treat skin that has already seen sun damage, we are also passionate about educating you about skin cancer prevention and ways to protect your skin before the damage occurs. The sun can give your skin a warm glow, but the new color you see IS a sign of skin damage. Trust us, we see the not-so-pretty effects of sun exposure every day! That’s why this blog is dedicated to what every Minnesotan needs to know about skin cancer and the damaging effects of the sun.
With spring weather finally arriving, everyone is anxious to get outdoors to exercise, do yard work or play with the kids.  Since we live in a colder climate, many Minnesotans don’t  worry quite as much about sun protection. After all, they are cooped up inside and out of the rays of the sun for so many winter months and they need more vitamin D. While the sun is a great source of vitamin D, a recent study showed that people who use sunscreen still experience a spike in vitamin D levels after sitting in the sun so keep that in mind! Boost your levels with D-filled foods such as salmon, egg yolks, and mushrooms, too.
Melanoma Monday is May 5th
We know, life gets busy and there isn’t anything on your skin that is particularly concerning at the moment, so that dermatologist appointment can wait, right? Wrong. This really IS something you need to do. Tell your friends and family, too. Visit this page to find a clinic near you to visit. You’ll also find helpful tools and resources there. Skin checks are quick and easy and you’ll feel better knowing someone is keeping an eye on possible skin changes. You’ve heard it before – early detection is key! Below is an example of what a changing mole might look like. Suspicious moles are often ones that are not even in color. Other reasons to be suspicious are: asymmetry, uneven borders, changes like growth in size of mole or itchy/bleeding moles or a mole that just looks different than the rest of your moles.
  • On average, one American dies from melanoma every hour. In 2014, it is estimated that 9,710 deaths will be attributed to melanoma.
  • Melanoma is the most common cancer for young adults 25 to 29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old.
  • When caught early, skin cancer – including melanoma – is highly treatable. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent.
  • Just shy of 77,000 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed last year across the nation.
  • More men than women were diagnosed with skin cancer and more men died from skin cancer last year.

New Spring Fashion Trends

Saturday, March 8th, 2014

Spring is coming (we hope – someday!) and it will once again be time to kiss those sweaters goodbye and bring out your rain coat! If you like to stay on top of the fashion trends, we’ve listed some of the fashions that will be going strong this spring. Enjoy!

  1. The Boxy Jacket – Now this is one that you might want to skip if you’ve been working your tail off to get in great shape in the new year! Your cute little waist will be completely concealed in this style of jacket. They are pairing these with skirts or pants and are dressing them up and down.
  2. Contrast-Collar Button Down Shirts – The crisp, menswear-inspired dress shirt enjoys a makeover with cool, contrasting color and/or textured collars and cuffs.
  3. Billowy Wide-Legged Pants – Just look for a pair that’s leaner on the flare and higher-waisted to elongate your frame
  4. Tea Length Skirts – Yes, this is the one between the mini and the maxi. Girly-girls rejoice as this is a very feminine look.
  5. Tuxedo Striped Athletic Pants – To keep the look modern but refined, opt for a streamlined silhouette in unexpected white (black is so traditional) and pair the pants with a casual non-button-down top.
  6. The Shift Blouse – It IS everywhere and this is another style with a very boxy shape. You’ll be seeing it in exciting prints, luxurious textures, and varying necklines.

New Year Check-In

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

Happy New Year!!

Starting a fresh, new year is the ideal time to hit the reset button in many areas of your life. It is the perfect time to check yourself on your priorities, your health, your relationships and more! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, too. Make a special plan for your sweetie or devise a way to finally ask that person out that you’ve been thinking about nonstop.

Starting out 2014, you may also want to consider making a promise to yourself that you will take better care of your skin. Put on that sunscreen every day – even in these cold, winter days! Powerful rays from the sun don’t stop just because it isn’t hot outside. Protect what you’ve got!

You should also make a habit of checking your skin for new or changing spots. You should get something looked at (actually make that appointment!) if it is new, different or just plain odd. Checking your skin at the start of every new season (every 3 months) is a good way to remind yourself. These days, with smart phones that have reminders you can program, there are no excuses!

Maybe this new year you want a new look.  If you are stuck in a rut, change up that hair color! Cut it shorter! Grab a friend who is on the cutting edge of current trends and beg for his/her honest assessment of your style, whether it is clothing, hair or makeup. Come in to Belladerm for a consultation to find out what services/products could dramatically change your skin or body. This is the time! Be energized for NEW things in the NEW year and then get the momentum going to go after what you are passionate about changing.

Have you heard it takes 21 days to form a new habit? Some say that this claim came out of thin air and has no actual facts behind it. Whether or not that is true, this is an interesting article about the topic of habit formation. Don’t be discouraged if you are setting out to make a big transformation and 21 days pass but you aren’t feeling like you’ve got it down yet. Many people have given up because they continue to fail after 21 days so they resign to the fact that they simply cannot change. Stay the course and be encouraged. Your goals are worth your hard work and effort.

Our wish for you in the new year is that you will develop or continue healthy beauty habits, which include some pampering because you DO deserve it! We are here to help you in all of your aesthetic endeavors and don’t forget, consultations are free so come on in to chat with us!

Enjoy the New Year!

Stylists Say…

Wednesday, December 25th, 2013
Don’t we all wish our best friend was a stylist for the stars and could give us some help when it comes to choosing clothes/styles. The next best thing is to collect tips that stylists offer up and take their advice! Read on:
Accentuate with Accessories – Always
Stylists say that people underestimate how a bold accessory like a wide red belt or a gigantic emerald necklace can draw your eye somewhere and put the focus on what you love about yourself.
Looking Leggy
The key to wearing heels is wearing them with confidence. A stacked heel is good for everyday wear and stability. Stylists say if you’ve got great legs, wear a black dress and gold shoes, then everyone will look at your legs. But, a nude heel is the best investment. It should be almost skin tone to make your legs look leaner.
Skirt Length How-To
Midcalf is a tough length.  You have to be a giant to pull it off.  A pencil skirt or an A-line at the knee is better.  The middle of the knee is actually what stylists say is the most flattering for everybody.  From where the kneecap cuts, you want to go just about an inch above that.  Mini skirts should be retired when you are in your late 20s, unless you wear them with tights.
Last Minute Help
Stylists recommend using a triangular makeup sponge to easily wipe away the peskiest of deodorant streaks. Water doesn’t work! Don’t forget to keep a mini lint roller handy (especially when you leave the house in black!) and a few safety pins of various sizes in your purse to fix a broken strap or busted button.  Need to secure a plunging V-neck? Use Vapon Topstick toupee tape, which has more staying power than traditional fashion tape.

Keep Calm & Make it Through the Holidays

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013

Mid-November hits and it you can almost feel something different in the air. Besides the crisp, cold wind chill, that is! You can feel it when you stroll into your favorite mall or store – a certain energy and urgency is felt everywhere you go. Do you ever get to New Year’s Day and think, “WHAT just happened? It was all a whirlwind!” The holiday season can be so much more enjoyable when you stay focused on taking care of yourself and letting the little things go. Yes, I know these days it is harder than ever to not want to keep up with everyone else and make impressive little custom Pinterest-inspired name placards for the Thanksgiving meal BUT really, wouldn’t you rather be in a better mood for your loved ones? Missing out on some precious sleep to make crafty goodies is something you might want to reconsider. Maybe pick a few special areas in which you will be an overachiever – an amazing Christmas lights display or tree decor, a couple of impressive new recipes at Christmas, extra-special gifts this year – but vow to not run yourself ragged doing it all perfectly.  In the end, the memories with your family are what counts, so stay focused on that!

A couple of tips for the season:

  • Keep a bunch of generic but well-loved gifts on hand and stocked up so you don’t have to leave your house at the last minute. There is always someone that slips through the cracks or who you just spontaneously want to thank with a little gift, so this will come in handy!
  • Experts suggest taking a time out from the holiday hustle and bustle to enjoy a hot cup of coffee, a steamy cup of soup or a “leisurely”, but healthy meal. This will not only fill you up but boost your energy and your immune system for all you still have to do. We have some fabulous ways to give you a little break from the holiday frenzy. Watch for specials from Belladerm to treat yourself!
  • Don’t cut out exercise during this time. You may need to scale back to fit in all of the things you need to get done right now, but keep up some sort of routine. You’ll need it to deal with the the holiday hoopla you’ll encounter.
  • We know you can’t do this every night, but choose one night a week to wind down with a cup of hot chamomile or a hot bath about an hour before you head for bed. This will recharge your batteries.
  • Keep eating well and making sure that your body is getting vitamins C & zinc to combat the germs circulating everywhere.
  • If holiday weight gain is a worry on your mind, think about keeping a casual log of what you consumed each day. When you are accountable, you can make better choices. Better yet, find a pal or spouse to discuss progress with. And allow yourselves special treats. It is the holidays, after all! Even just focusing on portion control helps a great deal!

Love Your Lips

Saturday, July 27th, 2013

Even if you get to the pool and slather sunscreen on your face and body before you spend the day in the sun, you’ve likely forgotten something important — your lips. Using a sunscreen on your lips protects you in two ways. First, because the sun ages skin (lips included), the sunscreen keeps your lips feeling and looking healthy and vibrant. Second, skipping the sun protection in your lip products puts you at an increased risk of getting skin cancer or another skin condition.

Sun damage leads to skin losing some of its elasticity, and unprotected lips are no exception. Also, lips naturally have thin skin, and sun damage can make the skin appear even thinner.

If you like to add luster to your lips with lip gloss, keep in mind that lip gloss without SPF might increase the possibility of developing skin cancer by acting as a kind of magnifying glass for the sun’s rays. You might want to consider using a lip gloss with SPF, layering a lip product with SPF of at least 30 underneath or foregoing the lip gloss completely and switching to a matte lip product with SPF.

Since sun damage builds up over time, it’s never too late to start good practices to give your lips some sun protection! Belladerm has complimentary lip balm with SPF15 because we care about keeping your lips luxurious!

Planning Ahead for Wedding Day Beauty

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

In honor of our daughter’s upcoming wedding next month, we are throwing in a little article about wedding beauty!

There are so many details to plan for when it comes to your wedding. Don’t forget to figure out what special treatments to do prior to your big day and when they should be done? Consultations are free at Belladerm and we love helping in any way to make your life easier and more enriching! Here are some guidelines to keep in mind:

A month before

Get your eating on track. Proper nutrition is the key to kick-starting skin nutrition. Consider increasing whole foods/grains and as always, drink plenty of water!

If you haven’t started exfoliating your skin, now is the time to begin. Now is also a perfect time to consider treatments like microdermabrasion or chemical peels to slough off dead skin and provide a clean canvas to treat with topicals for the next month. This would also be the time to get any injectable like Botox. Laser hair removal is good to do anytime but keep in mind that it is a series of treatments so it does need to be planned out.

A couple of weeks before

Brow waxing should be done no sooner than 7-10 days prior to your wedding. Be sure you aren’t on any antibiotics, steroids, topicals (such as Retin-A) and that you aren’t sunburned. If by chance there is a mishap and skin comes off with the wax or you have a strange reaction to one of the products used, there will be enough time for your skin to heal a bit and recover. Of course, this is most important for facial waxing due to all of the wedding pictures, but just as important for waxing below the belt. No one wants to ruin their honeymoon by having irritated skin!

A week before

In the weeks leading up to your wedding, using a vitamin C serum at least once a day will help maintain a glowing, even skin tone.  Also, get horizontal. Lie on the floor with your feet elevated on the edge of a couch or a coffee table for 5-10 minutes to increase blood circulation to your facial tissues. This, in turn, nourishes the skin and gives it a glow.  Stay hydrated and minimize your intake of alcohol. Don’t try any new products, so you won’t have any allergies to them – that includes hair products.

The day before

Above all, get plenty of rest before you walk down the aisle! If you know your skin can tolerate it, the Hydrafacial will leave your skin dewy on the day of!

The day of

Yay, you made it! Now, just stay consistent with your skin care routine. Gently exfoliate in the morning to  slough away any dead skin to reveal a brighter complexion, as well as a smooth, even surface for makeup to be applied to.

Simple Ways to Feel Sexy This Summer

Friday, June 21st, 2013

Boost your sexiness this summer to feel more confident in every area of your life! Here’s how to be a bit more like that every day!

  • GET YOUR GLOW ON: Light a scented candle in your den or break out those candlesticks for a romantic dinner. Candlelight casts a warm, cozy glow over everything and everyone in the room and is so much more flattering than harsh lightbulbs. You will — literally and figuratively — see yourself in a new light.
  • GO SMOOTHER: The results of laser hair removal will no doubt get your libido going! Ohhh la la! Taking good care of yourself in any way boosts your confidence, making you feel more sexy! Stop in or give us to call to learn more about that beauty treatment you’ve been considering. Consultations are free!
  • READ SOMETHING RACY: Just knowing you’re reading something risqué in public is sure to give you a teeny confidence boost.
  • GET SOFT: Try picking out a yummy lotion in a scent you love and take the time to really slather it on. You’ll end up feeling soft, smooth, and just…well, sexy.
  • CHANGE IT UP: Play up your eyes with a new eyeliner, or try a different gloss on your lips. When you feel beautiful, you feel sexy.
  • SLOW DANCE: Slow-dance. Fitting together so snugly and swaying in sync is unbelievably sensual and intimate.
  • UNDERNEATH IT ALL: Throw away those faded granny panties and buy some new underwear. The sexier, the better — but G-strings aren’t required. New bikinis, boy shorts, or even basic briefs can make you feel special.
  • SWEAT IT OUT: Workouts can leave you feeling strong and sexy. The endorphins will lift your mood, too!
  • GET IN TUNE: Create lustful playlists that remind  you of when you were falling in love.  You’ll be surprised at how it takes you back to those emotions!
  • TURN OFF: Your phone. And the TV. And your laptop. Life’s distractions keep you from being fully in touch with yourself, never mind anyone else, says Louann Brizendine, author of The Female Brain and The Male Brain. Unplug for a few minutes each day so you can plug in to what’s important: you. Focus on just one activity — reading a book or having a snack. Tuning out from the world helps make you a priority, which makes you feel special.
